Bonifacio, located at the southernmost tip of Corsica, is a town with exceptional heritage, perched on limestone cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. With a population of around 3,000 inhabitants, it experiences a significant influx of tourists during the summer season, attracting visitors from all over the world with its spectacular setting, rich history, and vibrant port.
The old town, perched over 70 meters above the sea, is a true labyrinth of narrow streets lined with ancient houses with ochre facades. Its medieval past is still visible through iconic monuments like the Genoese citadel, built in the 12th century, which offers a breathtaking panorama of the Strait of Bonifacio and Sardinia, visible on clear days. The King of Aragon’s staircase, carved into the cliff, is one of the most impressive curiosities in the city, with its 187 steps plunging towards the sea.
The port of Bonifacio, nestled at the end of a natural fjord, is a must-visit place where pleasure boating, commerce, and maritime activities come together. Surrounded by cafés and restaurants, it is the starting point for many excursions to the Lavezzi Islands, a paradisiacal archipelago designated as a nature reserve. The port also offers regular connections to Sardinia, further strengthening the exchanges between the two Mediterranean islands.
The Bonifacio coastline is strikingly beautiful, alternating between steep cliffs, sea caves, and idyllic beaches. Among them, the beach of Petit Sperone, accessible after a short walk, is famous for its white sand and crystal-clear waters. A few kilometers from the town, the site of Piantarella and its turquoise waters attract windsurfing and paddleboarding enthusiasts.
Bonifacio is also the gateway to a wild hinterland, marked by maquis and mountain landscapes. Hiking trails, like the one at Capo Pertusato, allow visitors to explore grandiose panoramas while discovering local flora and fauna.
A town with a unique character, Bonifacio is as captivating for its history-rich heritage as for its exceptional natural environment. Between the sea and cliffs, tradition and modernity, it remains one of Corsica's most fascinating destinations.
